ABOUT THE BLOGGERS

Danielle and Rory are newlyweds living in Philadelphia, where they moved from their native Minnesota. They came to Philly for law school at Drexel University, but currently only Danielle has remained strong in her quest. She recently reached the end of her first year, and is now a legal rock star! For the summer she is interning at Philadelphia VIP (see post of February 26, "Spotlight: Philadelphia VIP"). Rory dropped out and is now working for a federal contractor as a writer. Check out the blog, where these happily-married white kids post about their adventures in food, a little travel, and then some more well-earned food. Sometimes, when Rory is asleep, Danielle even throws in some posts about crafts and other boring things, if you're into that.

Tasty Kakes

When you look up "Tasty Kakes- definition" in a Google search, one of the first links is to the Urban Dictionary, which defines Tasty Kakes as follows:

This is a word- used much like 'sweet cheeks' or 'honey buns' - which is basically a term you use for friends referring to their backside in a jokingly flirtacious manner. somewhat like 'hey, hot stuff!' you might instead say 'hey, tastykakes!' and spank their backside as you stroll by. this can be shortened to 'what's up, tasty?' or pluralized, 'hey there, tasties- you guys missed the movie!' however, don't say 'hey tastykake!'  because this suggests that they have only a single butt cheek.

Upon learning this, you may ask yourself why Philadelphians and much of the surrounding East Coast area citizens are so obsessed with Tasty Kakes.  Well, to an outsider from the Midwest, this doesn't seem to make a whole lotta sense.

So, we turn our search to a Wikipedia article to find that Tasty Kake is:

"The brandname for a line of snack foods manufactured by the Tasty Baking Company, currently headquartered at the Philadelphia Naval Business Center (formerly the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[1] Established in 1914 by Philip J. Baur and Herbert T. Morris
and originally selling its product only in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, the company now distributes its products in several states on the East Coast and has been gradually expanding across the United States."

Ah, it all becomes clear now that what these East Coast denizens are enjoying is not, in fact, a stranger's backside, but a delicious bakery item!

With everything from Krimpets to Kandy Kakes, Pies, Kreamies, Cookie Bars, Donuts, and more, it is now no wonder why there is so much to love about this iconic, Philly, baked goody.  And, while Rory and I may not be rushing to join the 9,785 people who have "liked" the Tastykakes Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Tastykakes/11204744220), we did have an enjoyable first experience with our very own Tastykakes products today.  Thank you Professor Kraybill for introducing two uninformed Minnesotans to the pleasures of Tastykakes!
