ABOUT THE BLOGGERS

Danielle and Rory are newlyweds living in Philadelphia, where they moved from their native Minnesota. They came to Philly for law school at Drexel University, but currently only Danielle has remained strong in her quest. She recently reached the end of her first year, and is now a legal rock star! For the summer she is interning at Philadelphia VIP (see post of February 26, "Spotlight: Philadelphia VIP"). Rory dropped out and is now working for a federal contractor as a writer. Check out the blog, where these happily-married white kids post about their adventures in food, a little travel, and then some more well-earned food. Sometimes, when Rory is asleep, Danielle even throws in some posts about crafts and other boring things, if you're into that.

Tasty Kakes

When you look up "Tasty Kakes- definition" in a Google search, one of the first links is to the Urban Dictionary, which defines Tasty Kakes as follows:

This is a word- used much like 'sweet cheeks' or 'honey buns' - which is basically a term you use for friends referring to their backside in a jokingly flirtacious manner. somewhat like 'hey, hot stuff!' you might instead say 'hey, tastykakes!' and spank their backside as you stroll by. this can be shortened to 'what's up, tasty?' or pluralized, 'hey there, tasties- you guys missed the movie!' however, don't say 'hey tastykake!'  because this suggests that they have only a single butt cheek.

Upon learning this, you may ask yourself why Philadelphians and much of the surrounding East Coast area citizens are so obsessed with Tasty Kakes.  Well, to an outsider from the Midwest, this doesn't seem to make a whole lotta sense.

So, we turn our search to a Wikipedia article to find that Tasty Kake is:

"The brandname for a line of snack foods manufactured by the Tasty Baking Company, currently headquartered at the Philadelphia Naval Business Center (formerly the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[1] Established in 1914 by Philip J. Baur and Herbert T. Morris
and originally selling its product only in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, the company now distributes its products in several states on the East Coast and has been gradually expanding across the United States."

Ah, it all becomes clear now that what these East Coast denizens are enjoying is not, in fact, a stranger's backside, but a delicious bakery item!

With everything from Krimpets to Kandy Kakes, Pies, Kreamies, Cookie Bars, Donuts, and more, it is now no wonder why there is so much to love about this iconic, Philly, baked goody.  And, while Rory and I may not be rushing to join the 9,785 people who have "liked" the Tastykakes Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Tastykakes/11204744220), we did have an enjoyable first experience with our very own Tastykakes products today.  Thank you Professor Kraybill for introducing two uninformed Minnesotans to the pleasures of Tastykakes!

    Journal: Tastykakes

Philadelphia has these things called "Tastykakes." They seem like a pretty big deal out here: I know some people in Minnesota who are from the East Coast still crave them! I have decided they are a lot like any other junk food you might see, similar to Hostess or Little Debbie snacks. I have no idea whether Hostess and Little Debbie exist in Philly, but at least for Midwesterners reading this you should get the idea.

I also don't know yet what varieties all exist in the realm of Tastykakes, but because they are such a cultural institution out here I feel obligated to find out and try each one. Danielle and I had our first go at them during an Academic Skills Workshop today at the law school. I pigishly tried like three kinds: Peanut Butter Kandy Kakes, Chocolate Kandy Kakes, and Banana-something-or-others. Just kidding I had four, and I just remembered the fourth: Chocolate Lovers Cupcakes. So expect me to be literally twice the man you remember the next time you see me, because it looks like there are dozens of Tastykake varieties for me to discover.

At the end of the first round, Banana-something-or-others are at the top of the leader board. I will find out their actual name eventually when I create the leader board. So eat an individually-wrapped junk food cake and think of us today.

    Regards,
    Rory

A Taste of Things to Come

    Hi all,

I just wanted to give anyone who might be reading the blog already something to keep them excited, and give anyone who isn't following us yet a reason to hop on board. I am going to give you a preview of some upcoming segments and individual posts we have planned!!!

This weekend is labor day, and we have some big ideas. Mostly the ideas are the lame kind of stuff that lame couples like us do: shopping, a bike ride up some trail to some historic or otherwise unimportant spot, probably having some wine together and passing out at 10pm, etc. But the stuff we plan to blog about should be neat.

This includes the first installment of what we hope is a recurring segment revolving around our quest to find our favorite cheesesteaks in the city! We have maybe had three or four so far, dating back to February 2011 when we first came out here to visit law schools. We have to take some time to recap what we have tasted so far, and then we plan to resume the search by checking out a nearby hoagie hotspot this weekend, which also claims to have the "Best Milkshakes on Campus!"

Another up and comer is going to deal with interesting quotes we hear, funny or awesome things professors and colleagues say, things we hear on the subway, and the like. I suspect Danielle will take the reigns on that segment, so if you like her better than me keep your eyes open!

Danielle also wants to update everyone on a very special Wii game in another, probably rare post from my lovely wife:)

And finally, we are hoping to soon host a lovely, virtual HOUSE WARMING PARTY! We want everyone who has never been to Philly to understand what we go through on a day-to-day basis;) Really, though, we just want to have some fun and give you a chance to see the world from our eyes. Sadly many of you will never see our new home, so this will be your chance to get a brief walking tour of our place, neighborhood, and maybe even our new school! So get ready to pour yourself your favorite drink and join us for some mild celebration sometime soon.

Alrighty folks, you can start getting excited now! Keep checking in with us, especially after this weekend, and be good to yourselves!

    Videos

    Dear all,

We have realized that the video link to our YouTube Channel (MN Nice/City of Brotherly Love) sucks and does not really tell you much about the videos. We will try to somehow provide corresponding posts when we upload new videos to let you know the videos' relevance.

In case you are wondering, the link I am talking about is on the right side of the blog. Also, we will begin cleaning up and trying to be more active blog-wise soon; we are still figuring out the blog and especially the YouTube channel. Okay great, thanks for listening.

    New Welcome

Welcome to our blog, everyone! We will soon begin posting pictures, stories, and other tasty e-treats intended to entertain and inform you about our life here in Philadelphia! Thanks for joining us, and if you are checking in please leave comments, let us know what needs fixing, and let us know what you are up to from time to time. Enjoy.

    -Rory

P.S. I had previously posted a different, much worse "Welcome" post, if you were wondering where it went. I just decided it didn't represent me and Danielle; I like this new one better.
